Use this WiFi troubleshooting checklist to isolate slow speeds, dead zones, intermittent connections, and complete outages before replacing equipment or calling your ISP. The workflow starts with simple tests, then moves through device placement, router settings, interference, hardware, and service problems.

WiFi problems can look similar even when the underlying causes are different. A weak signal may resemble a slow internet plan, while an ISP outage may be mistaken for a router failure. The most reliable approach is to change one variable at a time and compare results.
First, determine whether the problem affects one device or the entire network. Next, compare a wireless connection with a wired connection, if possible. Then test at different locations and times. This helps separate a device issue from a coverage issue, a local network issue, or an internet service issue.
Before beginning, record the basics: the affected device, approximate location, time of day, connection type, and the task that fails. Note whether webpages load slowly, video buffers, calls drop, or the device disconnects entirely. These details make patterns easier to identify and prevent repeated troubleshooting.

Checklist by scenario
If WiFi is not working anywhere
- Check the modem, gateway, and router power lights. Confirm that power cables are firmly connected and that the network equipment has not been switched off at a power strip.
- Restart the modem and router in sequence. Disconnect power, wait briefly, reconnect the modem first, allow it to finish starting, and then reconnect the router. The exact startup time varies by equipment.
- Check whether the WiFi network name appears on a phone or laptop. If it does not appear, confirm that wireless service is enabled in the router’s management app or admin page.

If WiFi keeps disconnecting

- Move the device close to the router and test again. If stability improves nearby, coverage or interference is a stronger possibility than an internet-service failure.
- Install available updates for the device and check whether the router has a pending firmware update. Apply updates through the manufacturer’s normal process and avoid interrupting power during installation.
- Forget the saved WiFi network on the affected device, reconnect, and enter the password again. This can clear an outdated or corrupted connection profile.

If speeds are slow
- Run a WiFi speed test near the router, then repeat it in the problem area. Use the same device and, when possible, the same test method so the comparison is meaningful.
- Compare the result with a wired test. A wired connection that performs normally while WiFi is slow suggests a wireless or local-network problem. If both are slow, investigate the modem, router connection, active downloads, or ISP service.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and high-bandwidth streams while testing. Check the router’s connected-device list for unexpected or unusually busy clients.

If one room has a dead zone
- Test the same device in several locations and note where the connection becomes weak or unstable.
- Move the router into an open, central position, elevated from the floor and away from large metal objects, thick obstructions, and sources of electrical interference.
- Adjust the client’s band selection only after testing. A device at the edge of coverage may be more reliable on 2.4 GHz, while a nearby device may benefit from 5 GHz or a newer band supported by both devices.

- For persistent multi-room or multi-floor coverage problems, compare a mesh WiFi system with an extender. A mesh setup may be easier to manage across larger areas, but placement and backhaul quality still matter. Do not add equipment until you have confirmed that placement is the actual limitation.
What to double-check
- Router location: Confirm that the router is not hidden behind furniture, placed inside a cabinet, or located at one end of the home when a central position is practical.
- Network name and password: Make sure the device is joining the intended network rather than a saved guest network or a neighboring network with a similar name. If you change credentials, reconnect important devices deliberately.

- Hardware age and capacity: If the router struggles only when many clients are active, document the client count and traffic pattern before considering an upgrade. A newer standard is not automatically a solution for a placement or service problem.
Common mistakes

Keep a short network record with the equipment models, firmware dates, ISP connection type, router location, and the last known good test results.
